'Adventures in the Literary Marketplace': students' work

For the last two years, Prof. Emma Clery of the University of Southampton has run a course for English BA students which involves the study of some of the rare texts in the Chawton House Library collection.

The 'Adventures in the Literary Marketplace' course looks at issues surrounding eighteenth-century authorship and publishing, and centres on each student 'adopting' a book in the Chawton collection and researching the book's author, publishing history and contemporary reception, as well as looking at the text itself.

Below are some of the results of the students' work, including bibliographical details of the book, biographical information about the author, the book's publishing history and a critical essay on the work. The texts in question are mostly little-known and the students' research is a valuable resource for future readers and scholars of these works.
